CAIRO / RankWire.AI / – Egypt’s net international reserves reached a provisional total of $55.0723 billion at the close of June 2026. This figure broke the $55 billion barrier for the first time and set a new record high. The Central Bank of Egypt announced the data on July 8. At the end of May, reserves stood at $53.1342 billion. The monthly growth was approximately $1.94 billion, or nearly 3.6%, making June the most robust month in the first half of the year.

Egypt started 2026 with net international reserves of $51.4516 billion as of December. This amount increased to $52.5938 billion in January. It then rose further to $52.7455 billion in February and $52.8306 billion in March. Reserves reached $53.0092 billion in April before climbing to $53.1342 billion in May. The June figure continued the upward trend observed during the first six months of the year.
The total reserves in June were about $3.62 billion higher than the December 2025 level, representing an increase of slightly over 7% in the first half of the year. In January, the Central Bank of Egypt stated that reserves covered approximately 6.3 months of merchandise imports. The June report did not provide a new estimate of import coverage nor a detailed explanation of the factors driving the monthly reserve increase.
June surge pushes reserves to new record
Egypt also experienced significant growth in remittance inflows during the current fiscal year. Remittances reached $39.2 billion from July 2025 through April 2026, compared to $29.4 billion during the same period a year earlier. In April alone, inflows increased to about $4.3 billion from roughly $3 billion in April 2025. Official statements did not directly link these remittance figures to the June increase in foreign reserves.
The country’s current account deficit expanded to $5.1 billion in the January to March 2026 quarter, up from $2.3 billion in the same quarter of the previous year. Higher remittances, tourism revenue, and Suez Canal income offset part of the larger merchandise trade deficit. Net foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows during the quarter totaled $3.7 billion, slightly below the $3.8 billion recorded a year earlier.
External developments support reserve milestone
On June 29, the International Monetary Fund reached a staff-level agreement with Egyptian authorities. The agreement included the seventh review of Egypt’s economic program and a separate review related to a sustainability facility. The IMF indicated that gross international reserves remained broadly stable at the end of March. The June reserve figure reflects the outcomes of these review discussions and provides the latest official estimate of Egypt’s net international reserves.
Egypt concluded the first half of 2026 with reserves surpassing all previous monthly figures reported by monetary authorities. The June total was nearly $2 billion higher than May’s figure and over $3.6 billion above the December 2025 level. Official data show consistent growth from January through May, with a notable increase in June. The provisional month-end figure now stands at $55.0723 billion, setting a new record.
