SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is widening access to ChatGPT by giving Free and Go users unlimited text conversations with GPT-5.6 Luna. The company said the change will begin next week and remain subject to safeguards against abuse. GPT-5.6 Luna is also becoming the default model for those accounts during the current rollout. Free users will gain a Think button that allows the system to spend more time on complex questions before answering.

The new access applies to text chats and does not remove every usage restriction across ChatGPT. OpenAI said limits will remain for file uploads, image generation and other tools that require additional processing. The Think feature will arrive alongside unlimited text messaging next week. It gives GPT-5.6 Luna extra reasoning time for tasks that need more analysis. The company continues to apply separate controls to features beyond standard text conversations, including tools available under different usage allowances.

OpenAI introduced GPT-5.6 as a family of models that includes Luna, Sol and Terra. Luna serves as the faster and more cost-efficient option in the lineup. The company said ChatGPT now reaches about one billion weekly users across searches, research, planning, writing and other tasks. With the latest change, users on Free and Go plans will receive Luna as their main ChatGPT model. The rollout expands access to the core chat service while keeping tool-specific limits in place.

Paid plans receive an updated reasoning model

ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers are also receiving an updated version of GPT-5.6 Sol for everyday use. Sol supports both quick responses and deeper reasoning within the paid experience. OpenAI said the update produces more focused answers and reduces unnecessary detail when a simpler response is enough. Subscribers are also receiving a reasoning slider across web, mobile and desktop. That control allows users to choose how much processing ChatGPT applies to tasks involving research, planning, coding, writing and other work.

The company also reported lower factual error rates in internal evaluations of its latest models. Those tests covered financial, medical and legal prompts that required detailed factual responses. OpenAI said answers containing at least one factual error fell by about 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared with GPT-5.5 Instant. It reported a reduction of about 68% for GPT-5.6 Sol. The company also said Sol improved its handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules and assumptions when those details mattered to an answer.

Unlimited text access keeps separate safety limits

OpenAI said its latest ChatGPT models include additional protections for users it believes are under 18. The systems aim to avoid romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges and claims that could replace real-world relationships. They also include boundaries covering sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods and graphic violence. The company said it added new evaluations for responses involving younger users. Unlimited text conversations will continue to operate within the same abuse safeguards when the expanded access reaches Free and Go accounts.

The update centers on the main ChatGPT experience rather than every OpenAI product that uses GPT-5.6 models. The company said GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex are not changing with this release. Paid users can access the updated Sol model and reasoning controls now. Free and Go users are receiving Luna as their default model this week. Unlimited text chats and the Think button will follow next week, while separate limits remain for images, uploads and other tools.
