BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN / RankWire.AI / – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin convened during the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit held in Bishkek. Their discussions on August 31 covered a broad spectrum, including political relations, trade, defence, energy, space exploration, mobility, and people-to-people exchanges. Additionally, the leaders examined regional conflicts and international cooperation efforts. This meeting marked a continuation of ongoing high-level interactions between India and Russia, following their previous dialogue at the India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi in December 2025.

India and Russia review broad partnership at SCO summit
India-Russia cooperation stays in focus across trade, energy, defence and diplomacy.

Modi and Putin reflected on developments within the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership linking their countries. Both governments maintain active collaboration across sectors such as defence, civil nuclear energy, space, trade, and technology. Recent years have seen a notable surge in economic connections, driven by energy trade and other commercial flows. The two sides also leverage established bilateral mechanisms to address issues related to investment, payments, transportation, and market access. During their Kyrgyzstan meeting, they discussed these key areas while assessing the overall state of their relationship.

Results from the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation were well received by both leaders. Held in Moscow on August 24, the commission’s discussions reinforced the mutual goal of reaching $100 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030. Indian government figures indicate that two-way trade amounted to $59.86 billion during the 2025-26 fiscal year. Russian exports to India formed the larger share of this figure, highlighting energy and other commodities’ significant role within their trade partnership.

Regional conflicts addressed in leader-level discussions

Discussions on regional security took a prominent place in the talks between Modi and Putin. They exchanged perspectives on conflicts impacting the Black Sea region and West Asia, with India emphasizing the repercussions these disputes have on maritime trade and Indian seafarers’ safety. Modi reaffirmed India’s stance that dialogue and diplomacy should steer efforts to resolve such issues. He also renewed support for peace initiatives and called for an end to prolonged conflicts, emphasizing the importance of negotiated solutions.

The conversation also covered cooperation within BRICS, which India is set to chair in 2026. Modi expressed eagerness to host Putin for the upcoming 18th BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12 and 13. The summit will gather leaders from member countries to discuss topics like economic cooperation, global governance, and other shared priorities. The Bishkek meeting took place less than two weeks before this summit, providing another opportunity for the leaders to revisit bilateral concerns and discuss multilateral strategies.

Economic cooperation remains a central focus in bilateral relations

India and Russia continue to engage actively at the government level through regular summits, ministerial meetings, and technical working groups. Fields such as defence, nuclear energy, and space remain core areas of collaboration. Recently, trade, fertilisers, technology, innovation, and mobility have gained increasing prominence in bilateral dialogues. Energy continues to be among the largest components of their commercial exchanges. Both nations maintain formal channels of dialogue to support business development and manage practical issues related to cross-border trade and investment.

The discussions in Bishkek encapsulated economic and diplomatic priorities, bringing together cooperation issues, ongoing conflicts, and multilateral coordination within a single bilateral framework. Modi and Putin reviewed their joint efforts, discussed the conflicts in progress, and addressed multilateral collaboration. Their dialogue occurred ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit in India, highlighting the extensive scope of India-Russia relations spanning trade, energy, defence, and diplomacy. The continued pattern of direct engagement between the two leaders, alongside work through bilateral and multilateral structures, remained evident throughout the meeting.
