NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – In recent investigations, New York City health authorities identified Legionella DNA within a Yankee Stadium cooling tower, prompting concerns amid an outbreak in the South Bronx. By Tuesday evening, the city confirmed 11 cases of Legionnaires’ disease, with one individual succumbing and three remaining hospitalized. The New York City Health Department identified initial positive PCR findings in 10 out of 24 sampled cooling towers across ZIP codes 10451 and 10456.

NYC finds Legionella DNA in Yankee Stadium cooling tower
Yankee Stadium is included in New York City’s South Bronx cooling tower investigation.

The region affected covers sections of the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods. As part of their investigation, health officials tested various cooling towers to track potential environmental sources of infection. PCR testing detects Legionella bacterial DNA but does not confirm if the bacteria are still alive. To determine viability, culture testing is needed, a process that can take up to two weeks, according to officials.

The Yankees have stated that this outbreak is not connected to Yankee Stadium. They noted their cooling towers were installed in 2024 and are subject to routine water quality assessments. On August 20, a Legionella test yielded a negative result. Furthermore, the team conducted weekly water quality and bacteriological indicator tests on August 26, September 2, and September 9, before city officials sampled the stadium on September 11.

Stadium cooling system disinfected as testing expands

In response, city health authorities mandated comprehensive cleaning and disinfection of all 10 cooling towers with preliminary positive PCR results. The New York City Health Department set a deadline of September 14 for completion of these measures. Later, Health Commissioner Alister Martin confirmed that remediation had been carried out at each tower with concerning results. The Yankees reported that their stadium cooling tower was drained, cleaned, and disinfected on September 13, following notification of the initial findings by city officials.

Legionnaires’ disease, a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, typically results from inhaling tiny water droplets containing the bacteria. The disease mostly does not spread through person-to-person contact. Symptoms often include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. Authorities have urged anyone living, working, or visiting the South Bronx since late August and exhibiting flu-like symptoms to seek medical attention.

Ongoing efforts to pinpoint the outbreak’s origin

According to health officials, eight of the 10 cooling towers with initial positive PCR results have met the city’s 31-day Legionella testing requirements. Two properties have yet to provide the necessary testing data. Investigators are still analyzing lab results and case details related to the South Bronx cluster. The investigation includes cooling towers at Yankee Stadium and other sites within the affected neighborhoods as authorities strive to identify the source linked to the confirmed cases.

The Department of Health reassured residents in ZIP codes 10451 and 10456 that they can continue using tap water, showers, and air conditioning without concern. Officials also confirmed that entering buildings associated with the 10 cooling towers does not pose an additional risk. The Yankees mentioned that health officials have not requested the postponement of any games at Yankee Stadium. Meanwhile, city officials are closely monitoring the case developments while waiting for laboratory culture results from samples collected during the South Bronx investigation of Legionnaires’ disease.
