CAIRO, EGYPT / RankWire.AI / – By the end of August 2026, Egypt’s international reserves stood at a historic $57.2145 billion, according to the Central Bank of Egypt. This provisional figure was announced on September 7, and it marks the first time Egypt’s official reserve holdings have surpassed the $57 billion mark. At the end of July, reserves were $56.2939 billion, indicating a monthly growth of approximately $920.6 million or 1.6%.

Egypt foreign reserves rise to record $57.2 billion
Egypt’s foreign reserve stock rose for an eighth straight month in August 2026.

Beginning the year with $52.5938 billion in reserves in January, Egypt’s holdings steadily increased throughout 2026. By February, reserves grew to $52.7455 billion, followed by $52.8306 billion in March, and $53.0092 billion in April. The upward trend continued, reaching $53.1342 billion in May, and hitting the August record of $57.2145 billion. Overall, reserves have expanded by about $4.62 billion since January and roughly $5.76 billion compared to the end of December 2025.

Mid-year momentum accelerated the growth of Egypt’s reserves. From May’s $53.1342 billion, they climbed to $55.0723 billion in June, and then to $56.2939 billion in July, culminating in the August peak. These three months alone added over $4 billion to the total reserves. Compared to August 2025, the latest reserves are roughly $7.96 billion higher, reflecting an annual increase of approximately 16.2%.

    Remittances Boost Foreign Currency Inflows

For the fiscal year 2025/2026, remittances sent home by Egyptians abroad also reached an all-time high. The Central Bank of Egypt reported these inflows at around $47.3 billion, compared to approximately $36.5 billion during the previous fiscal year—a rise of 29.6%. In June alone, remittances hit about $4.2 billion, a 15.6% increase over the roughly $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025.

Egypt’s latest balance of payments figures cover the first nine months of the 2025/2026 fiscal year. Data show a deficit of $1.8 billion from July to March, while the capital and financial account recorded net inflows of $9.9 billion. Meanwhile, the current account faced a deficit of $14.6 billion, offering the most recent official snapshot of Egypt’s external sector prior to the August reserve update.

Continuous Monthly Reserve Gains in 2026

Throughout 2026, Egypt’s reserve figures have consistently reached new nominal highs. In June, reserves surpassed $55 billion, moving above $56 billion in July, and then crossing the $57 billion threshold in August. The nation has now recorded three straight month-end reserve totals exceeding $55 billion. The August figure also exceeds the December 2025 end-of-month reserve of $51.4516 billion by more than 10%.

These latest numbers place Egypt’s net international reserves at their highest-ever recorded level, maintaining a steady upward trajectory since the beginning of 2026. Every month from January to August saw a higher reserve total than the previous month. While the August figure remains provisional in the central bank’s reporting, the available data clearly indicate a persistent increase in Egypt’s reserve stock during the first eight months of the year.
