MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s electricity generation saw a 4.3% increase year-on-year during the initial eight months of 2026. The total output reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, compared to 35,935.3 GWh in the same period of 2025. This growth represents an approximate rise of 1,546.5 GWh. Early data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated improvements across several governorates. In August alone, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July. As a result, national electricity output remained above the 2025 figures.

In Muscat, the total electricity output experienced the most significant increase, jumping 204.8% compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a growth of 44.1%, and Al Wusta saw an 8.4% rise. Meanwhile, regions such as North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah collectively grew by 5.5%. Dhofar recorded a 4.6% increase over the same timeframe. The regional data revealed considerable variation in electricity growth, with several governorates reporting higher production during this period.

However, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah exhibited a different trend in the first eight months. Combined, their electricity output decreased by 16.4% compared to the same period in 2025. Musandam’s output stood at 376.0 GWh, showing little change from the previous year. Overall, regional figures demonstrated increases in most areas covered by the national data, confirming that Oman’s total electricity generation stayed above last year’s levels through August 2026. These statistics encompass data from January through August 2026.

Oman Sees Rise in Net Electricity Generation Across the Country

Net electricity production also saw growth during the January to August period, increasing by 4.6% to reach 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh in the previous year. This figure accounts for purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the net production surge with an increase of 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah experienced a 44.2% rise, while Al Wusta and Dhofar grew by 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The overall national increase was approximately 1,592.1 GWh.

The combined net electricity output of North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.4%. Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah saw a decline of 16.6% in net output. Musandam’s net production was 368.0 GWh, with its annual change rate remaining at 0.0%. Despite regional differences, Oman’s overall net electricity generation remained above the levels recorded in 2025. The regional patterns largely mirrored the movements in total electricity output, with several governorates experiencing growth over the eight months.

Water Output Declines During the First Eight Months of 2026

Meanwhile, Oman’s water production decreased over the same period. Total water output fell by 3.5%, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres compared to roughly 342.71 million cubic metres last year. In Muscat, water production dropped 6.2% to about 128.07 million cubic metres, down from approximately 136.57 million cubic metres during the same months in 2025. Other governorates also experienced a 3.4% decline, producing around 149.90 million cubic metres, compared to about 155.19 million cubic metres the previous year.

Dhofar bucked the national trend with an increase in water output, reaching approximately 52.68 million cubic metres, a 3.4% rise from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest data indicate that electricity and water production are moving in different directions across Oman through August 2026. While electricity output increased at both total and net levels, water production overall declined despite Dhofar’s positive growth. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
