WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – U.S. President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi discussed broader economic and energy cooperation at the White House on Tuesday. Their discussions centered on oil, natural gas, electricity, commerce, and private sector investment. Trump indicated that the United States aims to pursue numerous commercial agreements with Iraq, including deals related to crude oil production. Neither government disclosed contract values, project timelines, nor a comprehensive list of signed agreements. This meeting was the highlight of al-Zaidi’s official visit to Washington.

US Iraq talks focus on oil, power and investment
Energy cooperation anchors a wider US Iraq economic and commercial agenda.

Al-Zaidi traveled accompanied by ministers, senior officials, and business leaders for discussions spanning five economic sectors. Iraqi officials identified energy, transport, technology, healthcare, and education as key topics. Baghdad has instructed its oil, electricity, and communications ministries to prioritize collaborations with qualified American firms. The Iraqi government also engaged in talks about banking and insurance reforms with U.S. financial institutions and business groups. Officials characterized the visit as a step toward establishing practical commercial ties between Iraq and the United States.

Energy discussions included plans to increase crude oil output and develop natural gas resources for domestic consumption. Iraq is also seeking investment in power generation and transmission, as persistent supply shortages remain a major public concern. The cabinet approved an agreement with U.S.-based HKN Energy to develop the Himreen oilfield in northern Iraq. Additionally, the Electricity Ministry was authorized to finalize a broad cooperation agreement with General Electric, covering electricity generation, grid capacity, and transmission infrastructure.

    Energy Projects Drive Investment Negotiations

Chevron has engaged in talks with Iraqi authorities regarding significant upstream projects, including the West Qurna 2 oilfield. Earlier this year, Baghdad moved to replace Russia’s Lukoil as the operator of this field. Iraqi officials have also been in discussions with Exxon Mobil, HKN Energy, and other U.S. companies. Al-Zaidi stated that his government plans to substantially increase oil production within three years. Iraq possesses substantial crude reserves and remains a founding member of OPEC. Any increase in production must comply with the OPEC+ supply framework applicable to Iraq.

During the White House meeting, al-Zaidi emphasized Iraq’s desire for a fair OPEC production quota and reaffirmed its commitment to remain in the group. He linked this request to Iraq’s reconstruction needs following years of conflict with the Islamic State. Al-Zaidi estimated the damage at over $400 billion, with many displaced Iraqis still lacking permanent housing. Oil revenues are vital for funding government expenditure, reconstruction efforts, and public services. Consequently, the Iraqi government has prioritized oil and gas investments within its economic agenda in Washington.

Iraq Develops New Export Routes for Crude

Iraq has advanced work on alternative routes for crude oil exports. The Oil Ministry signed a preliminary agreement with a U.S.-Qatari consortium to conduct feasibility studies on the Kirkuk-Baniyas pipeline. This proposed pipeline would run from oil fields near Kirkuk to Syria’s Mediterranean coast. Iraq has also initiated the Basra-Haditha pipeline project, with a planned capacity of 2.5 million barrels per day. These initiatives are part of Iraq’s larger energy infrastructure development plan.

The discussions in Washington also extended beyond energy, covering cooperation in communications, technology, transportation, and broader infrastructure development. Iraqi officials reported that the delegation held meetings with U.S. government representatives, financial institutions, and corporate leaders during the visit. Both nations underscored economic cooperation as a key element of their bilateral relationship. Public statements following the White House talks confirmed ongoing negotiations, though final terms for many projects remain under discussion, and no definitive agreements have been announced.
