Panama Canal Anticipates First Possible Limit of 29 Ships Per Day Amid Drought Concerns

PANAMA / RankWire.AI / – As drought conditions intensify, the Panama Canal is exploring the possibility of further reducing daily ship transits. According to Administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta, traffic could decrease to approximately 29 vessels per day in February or March 2027. Any additional restrictions will depend on ongoing dry weather and reservoir water levels. Currently, the waterway is approaching a limit of 32 transits per day starting from Sept. 15.

The Panama Canal Authority began scaling back capacity after rainfall and watershed inflows fell below expected levels during the wet season. Transit numbers initially dropped to 34 before the planned reduction to 32. The canal relies heavily on freshwater stored in Gatun Lake and Alhajuela Lake to operate its locks, with each transit requiring water to raise or lower vessels between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

In fiscal 2026, the canal averaged 35 daily transits through June 30, with a total of 10,726 crossings from October to June, reflecting a 5.2% increase compared to the same period the previous year. These figures were recorded before worsening rainfall prompted the implementation of new operational limits. The canal remains a vital route for container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, and other vessels facilitating international trade.

Reservoir levels influence daily transit capacity

Long-standing water availability has dictated the number of ships crossing during dry spells. During the extreme 2023 drought, daily transits plunged to 22 in December as Gatun Lake’s water levels dropped to unusually low points. Following rainfall recovery and water conservation efforts, conditions improved. Canal management continues to monitor lake levels, watershed inflows, and precipitation as they determine daily operational capacity.

Additionally, vessel draft regulations have been adjusted as part of current water management strategies. A planned reduction of Neopanamax draft to 47.5 feet was not implemented after officials reviewed updated reservoir data, leaving maximum draft limits at 48 feet. These draft restrictions influence how deeply a ship is immersed in the water, affecting its cargo capacity through the canal.

Reduced transit slots lead to stricter booking procedures

In response to fewer daily transit slots, the canal has revamped its booking and auction processes. Current auction categories distinguish vessels based on cargo type, such as container ships, gas carriers, tankers, and bulk vessels. When other conditions are similar, full container ships with larger capacity receive priority in some Neopanamax allocations. Canal authorities urge vessels without reservations to utilize the booking system, as confirmed bookings guarantee scheduled transit dates.

While no formal decision has been made to limit traffic to 29 ships daily, Espino de Marotta mentioned that level as a potential restriction if dry conditions persist into early 2027. Moreover, the canal is progressing with the Río Indio reservoir project to bolster long-term water storage capacity. Officials state that this initiative will support canal operations and also enhance water supply for a significant portion of Panama’s population.
